The authors state in the preface that ‘Our book is about chemistry, written expressly for geologists’. A nice turn of phrase in the introductory chapter will be reassuring for most geology students though – studying the Earth with ‘the tools of chemistry’. This neatly puts the emphasis exactly where it should be, on what we discover about Earth systems rather than on chemistry for its own sake. The book is true to its word thereafter and includes a plethora of worked examples demonstrating the practical applications of the chemistry discussed.
