The Arabian Sea region is a key area for deciphering plate tectonic reconstructions including the opening of the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden, the northward drift of India, the evolution of the Makran accretionary prism and the geometry and extent of the Indus Fan. It is also a key area for testing models of climatic–tectonic interrelationships, in particular the evolution of the Indian summer monsoon.
