Books on the geology of northern Africa are not that common; to be asked to review two books in a 2–3 month period is exceptional! In my review of the Geology of Northwest Africa by Alain Piqué (Geological Magazine139, 2002, pp. 597–8), I wrote that ‘Picqué must be praised for his magnificent effort in bringing together so much information on Northwest Africa.
