David Beamish received a B.A. (1972) in physics from York University and a Ph.D. (1976) in geophysics from the University of Lancaster. He was later a NERC Research Fellow at the University of York. In 1977 he joined the Geomagnetism Research Group at the British Geological Survey (BGS) in Edinburgh. Since then he has remained at the Survey moving to the main office near Nottingham in 1990.
