Meteorites are the prime source for information about the composition of extraterrestrial materials. Meteorites were released during collisions as fragments from asteroidal bodies or planetesimals in the asteroid belt or from the surface of planets, such as Moon and Mars. In most cases meteorites recovered on the surface of the Earth only spent a few million years as individual bodies, so called meteoroids, in space.
