In 1911 the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften (KWG- Kaiser-Wilhelm-Society for the Promotion of Sciences) was founded in Berlin. It was the progenitor of the Max-Planck-Society, a name given to the society in 1946, after the Second World War.
