Volatiles have a complex and still discussed origin on terrestrial planets. In contrast to the giant planets that accreted their atmosphere by gravity, the atmospheres of Mars, Earth and Venus have different sources. Although a residual atmosphere from a primitive dense solar atmosphere cannot be fully discarded, since Brown (1949) it is generally accepted that the atmospheres of the terrestrial planets have a secondary origin.
