Let me now jump back in time to my Ph.D. thesis at the University of Michigan and also back a few pages to the end of Section 2. The last part of that section dealt with the effect of atmospheric CO2 concentrations on prebiotic O2 levels. Higher pCO2 leads to increased O2 because photolysis of CO2 is a source of O atoms that can recombine with each other (or with OH) to form O2. The results of one such calculation, performed a few years after I had graduated, were shown in Figure 2.2....
