The field of micropaleontology lost a valuable and valued member in December 2022. While lamented throughout the Turkish earth sciences community (Okay et al., 2023), the information has more slowly spread worldwide. Throughout his career, Ercan Özcan studied the paleontology and biostratigraphy of the Cretaceous and Cenozoic large benthic foraminifera across the Neo-Tethyan region. For those who had not previously heard or had not had the pleasure of interaction with Prof. Dr. Ercan Özcan, either in person or through his many scientific and professional-service contributions, please read his obituary written by Aral Okay, Demir Altiner, and György Less, that was published in the Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences [].
