Valeria Mikhalevich is a survivor of the siege of Leningrad, and is an accomplished natural scientist and poet. She was awarded her undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences in 1959, and since 1961 has been employed at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, first as a research technician, then as a Ph.D. candidate, and since 1992 as a Leading Research Officer.
