David Carter was born in 1922 and educated at Malvern and Birkbeck College (London). He volunteered to join the Royal Air Force, expressing a preference for flying operations. He was called up in 1940, undertaking his initial flight training in Canada. It was suggested that Dave would be particularly useful as a navigator, which Dave agreed was a sensible decision.
