George Albert Sanderson, Jr. was born August 22, 1926 in New Haven, Connecticut. He was raised by his mother and grandparents, who emigrated from Germany at the beginning of the 20th Century. “Sandy,” as he was known to friends and colleagues, attended New Haven High School and served in the U. S. Naval Reserve from 1944 to 1946. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1949, and received a doctorate in geology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1954.
