Sphairionia is a microorganism endemic to the Middle Permian Tethys Ocean. It is generally thought a small foraminifer or Incertae sedis; it may be a lagenid foraminifer (Pronina, 1996) or an umbellid charophyte (Vachard and others, 2001). The genus, with the type species Sphairionia sikuoides, was reported by Tiên (1987, 1988, 1989) from Southeast Asia, and has subsequently been recognized in other areas of the Tethys, as summarized in Pronina (1996) and Vachard and others (2001).
