Rastall is well known for his geological work extending over the period 1905-1949. His published contributions deal with problems in sedimentary petrology, stratigraphy, structure, and economic geology. He was also author of several textbooks, of which "Petrology of sedimentary rocks" is probably the best known, and editor of the Geological Magazine.
