Alfred A. Levinson was born on Staten Island, New York, and became interested in geology while in high school. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy and subsequently used his G. I. Bill benefits to attend the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. There, Al obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Geology in 1949, and a Ph.D. in Mineralogy in 1952.
