Fred was born near the eastern erosional edge of the Cretaceous foreland wedge in Boissevain, Manitoba. He attended the University of Manitoba, both in Brandon and Winnipeg, and obtained his B.Sc. in geology in 1957.

After graduation Fred headed west to Calgary and joined Sinclair Canada Oil Company as an exploration geologist. During his years with Sinclair Oil, Fred was involved in a variety of projects and activities, including fieldwork, well sitting, prospect generation and eventually management.
