Potma et al. (2001) recently proposed a sequence stratigraphic framework for the uppermost Givetian and Frasnian strata of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). They divided the succession into nine depositional sequences by recognizing ten regional sequence boundaries. Most of the delineated sequence boundaries consisted of a subaerial unconformity and a correlative conformity and, as they note, this follows the practice of Posamentier and Vail (1988) and Mitchum and Van Wagoner (1991). Such a sequence stratigraphic methodology is commonly referred to as Exxonian sequence stratigraphy.
