This special volume of the Bulletin of Canadian Petroleum Geology has two objectives. Firstly, it gathers together contributions which represent recent advances in our understanding of the Devonian of western Canada. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly from the perspective of the petroleum geologist, it summarizes our current knowledge of different aspects of the western Canadian Devonian as a petroleum system. As such, it seeks to augment previous contributions to this discipline, including the most recent Symposium on the Devonian System (McMillan et al., 1989).
