ABSTRACT
The Luscar Group (revised) forms the sequence of coal-bearing Lower Cretaceous strata that disconformably overlies marine and nonmarine strata of the Nikanassin Formation or Minnes Group and disconformably underlies marine shales of the Blackstone or Shaftesbury formations. It includes a thin, basal conglomerate, a predominantly nonmarine sandstone and shale unit that locally contains coal; a marine shale and sandstone unit, and an upper nonmarine sandstone and shale unit that contains thick commercial coal seams. These units form the Cadomin, Gladstone, Moosebar and Gates formations, respectively. The Luscar Group is exposed from Kakwa River to Clearwater River in the Foothills of Alberta. It represents a slight modification, by the inclusion of the thin basal conglomerate, from the previous usage of the term Luscar in the northern Foothills of Alberta.
The Luscar Group is correlative with the Bullhead Group and the lower part of the Fort St. John Group of northeastern British Columbia, and the Blairmore Group of the south-central and southern Foothills of Alberta. The Luscar Group is distinguished from the non-coal-bearing Blairmore Group by the presence of thick coal seams and a mappable marine shale unit.
RÉSUMÉ
Le Groupe Luscar (revisé) forme la séquence carbonifère du Crétacé Inférieur qui recouvre disconformément les strates marines et non-marines de la Formation Nikanassin du Groupe Minnes et qui est disconformément sous-jacent aux argiles marines feuilletées des formations Blackstone ou Shaftesbury. Ce groupe comprend une mince couche conglomératique de base; une unité de grès et d’argile feuilletée à prédominance non-marine, localement carbonifère; une unité d’argile feuilletée et de grès d’origine marine et une unité supérieure de grès et d’argile feuilletée non-marine, contenant des couches épaisses et économiques de charbon. Ces diverses unités de mesure forment respectivement les formations Cadomin, Gladstone, Moosebar et Gates. Le Groupe Luscar affleure de la Rivière Kakwa à la Rivière Clearwater dans les avant-monts (i.e., Foothills) de l’Alberta. L’inclusion de la mince couche conglomératique de base dans sa definition représente une légère modification de l’usage précédent du terme Luscar dans le nord des avant-monts de l’Alberta.
Le Groupe Luscar est correlatif du Groupe Bullhead et de la partie inférieure du Groupe Fort St. John du nord-est de la Colombie-Britannique et du Groupe Blairmore du centre-sud et des avant-monts de l’Alberta. Le Groupe Luscar est différencié du Groupe Blairmore non-carbonifère par la présence de couches épaisses de charbon et d’argile feuilletée marine cartographiable.
