ABSTRACT

The Waterways Formation is a basin facies of probable early Late Devonian age that envelopes an oil producing reef-fringed bank in the subsurface of west central Alberta. Samples collected from 17 diamond drill cores were polished and stained for dolomite. Seventy thin sections were studied petrographically. Insoluble residue studies, X-ray analysis and organic carbon determinations were completed.

The Waterways Formation consists of nodular, argillaceous, micritic and micritic-skeletal limestones interbedded with massive and laminated mictritic limestone and calcareous shales. Occasional beds of skeletal-micritic limestone are present. Other constituents present are dolomite, organic matter, pyrite and clay minerals.

The organic carbon, on a carbonate free basis, varies from 0.2 to 1.4 percent.

Skeletal remains present consist of brachiopods, echinoderms, gastropods, bryozoa, ostracodes, colpionellids, hystrichospheres, and Tentaculites. This fauna is considered to be a mixed assemblage of pelagic and benthonic forms.

The environment of deposition is interpreted as varying from 1) quiet, stagnant water below wave base with bottom conditions inhospitable to benthonic life, to 2) better oxygenated bottom conditions which allowed a bottom community to develop.
