It is 25 years since Sedimentology of Shale by Potter, Maynard & Prior was published and became a widely cited reference for the Earth’s most abundant group of sedimentary rocks. Since then several textbooks on mudrocks and on clay minerals have been published, but none has bridged the gap between the sedimentology and properties of fine-grained sediments and the mineralogy of their main components, i.e. clays. Does Mud & Mudstones bring about the reconciliation that was anticipated by Henry Sorby over 100 years ago? Well, it goes a little way, perhaps, but more importantly it brings a much greater awareness...
