Abstract

An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred on March 8, 1970 at an unusual location in north central Alberta, Canada. The epicentral coordinates obtained from a study of seismic records and the center of the "felt" report area indicate an epicenter near Snipe Lake. Past data indicate that an earthquake in this eastern Cordillera is a very rare event. No change appears to be needed for the seismic probability map of the 1970 National Building Code.
