Abstract

Recurrence formulae for calculating impedance tensor elements of the magnetotelluric field at the surface of N-layer anisotropic medium have been derived and numerical results obtained for some specific models. Directional properties of impedance tensor elements, apparent resistivities, deviation angles from perpendicularity of magnetotelluric fields, and polarization characteristics are analyzed and their importance for the interpretation of magnetotelluric results is discussed.
