In a paper by Smith et al. (1999), trace-element and stable-isotope measurements were reported from three sub-fossil samples of the azooxanthellate coral Desmophyllum cristagalli from two different tectonic settings. The second line of the paper’s Abstract reads: “One set [of samples] was from Orphan Knoll, near Newfoundland (1700 m depth, 50°25.57′N, 46°22.05′W) …”. This geographic position is not the actual location of the 1978 rock dredge haul.
