Many articles have been written about David Strangway, elaborating his profound scientific achievements and administrative performances. Here I focus on the humanitarian aspect of David through my own relationship with him.

David was my Ph.D. thesis supervisor at MIT when I started my graduate studies in the fall of 1964. He left MIT about a year later to join the University of Toronto. As David mentioned on an occasion, he was persuaded by John Tuzo Wilson to go back to Canada and serve his own country.
