Abstract

A new occurrence of the tabulate coral Saffordophyllum is described from turbidites in the Cobbs Arm sequence of Notre Dame Bay. The age of the fossil is interpreted as Ashgillian, and its presence indicates repetition in the stratigraphic column. The repetition is explained by postulating a thrust, and this interpretation is supported by the presence of a pebbly mudstone that resembles olistostromes, associated with thrusting, elsewhere in the Cobbs Arm Zone.
