The occurrence of a coiled nautiloid embedded in life orientation in the Middle Ordovician Bobcaygeon Formation just north of Manitoulin Island indicates that the sea was less than 10 m deep in this area at that time. This is the first documentation of preservation of a coiled cephalopod in life orientation in Ontario and probably in Canada. The nautiloid, Campbelloceras clochense, n.sp., extends the range of the Tarphyceratidae one complete stage from the Chazy to the top of the Black River.
