Abstract

Mean rates of in situ disintegration of quartzite and gabbro (5 plots for each rock type) in defoliated areas near Sudbury, Ontario, during the period from May 1971 to May 1973 were:graphicCoefficients of variation for the four rock type – measurement period combinations range from 83% to 111%.Differences in disintegration rate between rock types are not significant at greater than a 70% confidence level in either year of study, and differences between the two years of study are not significant at greater than an 80% confidence level for either rock type.Comparison of the results of this study with published data on total denudation rates in vegetated areas of similar climate and relief suggests that bedrock weathering in the study area is not proceeding at a greatly abnormal rate.
