Abstract

MINDEP is a computer-processable mineral deposits filing system being developed in the Department of Geological Sciences, University of British Columbia. At present, information for 6500 mineral deposits in British Columbia is being coded and entered into the system. A major problem facing any such file construction is the mechanical one of systematizing information, verifying it, entering it in computer-processable form and, in doing so, eliminating errors—a process termed 'data capture'. We have adopted an interactive data entering system using an off-line minicomputer with CRT display and auxiliary disk storage. Since a geologist can collect, enter, and check his own data without intermediaries, the system is virtually error-free. We commend it as an efficient, economical, and advanced routine for many related applications.
