On May 2–3, 2002, a workshop was held at Simon Fraser University’s Harbour Centre to discuss issues relating to sustainable development in the mining industry, with particular emphasis on contributions that can be made by geoscientists. The SUM21 workshop was attended by 65 people, and featured five keynote speakers as well as sixteen volunteered presentations. Abstracts for these talks were printed in Exploration and Mining Geology (2001, Vol. 10, p. 143–153).
