Abstract

The crystal structure of metarossite, Ca(VO 3 ) 2 .2H 2 O, has been determined from 3-dimensional Patterson and Fourier syntheses and has been refined by 2-dimensional Fourier and difference methods. V coordination polyhedra, in the form of distorted trigonal bipyramids, share edges to form double chains parallel to [010]. These chains are linked through edges and corners to Ca coordination polyhedra, in the form of distorted square anti-prisms, which share edges to form chains parallel to [100]. Long H bonds from the water molecules serve as additional links between the Ca and V polyhedra.
