Abstract

Two-dimensional Fourier and difference syntheses have been used to solve and refine the structure of vanadinite, Pb 5 (VO 4 ) 3 Cl. The isostructural relation ship of vanadinite to other apatite-like minerals has been confirmed. The chlorine ion is surrounded by 6 divalent Pb ions at the corners of a regular octahedron; the co-ordination of O and V is tetrahedral. Interatomic distances are given, and the accuracy of the results is assessed in terms of the standard deviations of atomic positions and of interatomic distance.
