The increased focus on new battery technologies in electric cars and renewable energies has led to an increased use in lithium (Li)-ion batteries. Consequently, the demand for high grade Li has increased. There are two main sources for Li: pegmatites (e.g., Greenbushes, Australia) and brines (e.g., Salar de Atacama, Chile). Large battery companies, such as Tesla, are building battery factories in North America, offering new opportunities for North American deposits to compete with the major producers in Australia, South America and Asia.
