This rather slender, compact, and beautifully illustrated book deserves attention as a reference for field geologists and academics alike. With some modification it could well serve as a text for an undergraduate course in metamorphic petrography, although for that it would require considerable reorganization.

The backbone of the book is nicely summarized in the author's dedication (p. v): “This book is dedicated to field mappers without whom instrument crank turners in the labs would have nothing useful to do”.
