We are pleased to dedicate this volume of The Canadian Mineralogist to Frank Christopher Hawthorne on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Frank's career and contributions to Mineralogy have been immense, and this preface covers a general outline of his influence.

Frank received his B.Sc. in Pure Geology from Imperial College, London, and an Associateship of the Royal School of Mines, both in 1968, and a Ph.D. in Geology from McMaster University in 1973. He joined the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Manitoba as a Post-Doctoral Fellow, became a University Research Fellow in 1980, Professor in 1986,...
