Chris Herd is a prolific young scientist who has already had a great impact on our understanding of how Martian basalts form and what they record about the red planet. His early work focused on carefully evaluating the oxidation state of Martian basalts by multiple methods, and then deciphering the controls on oxidation state during petrogenesis of these basalts. He subsequently worked on the partitioning of light lithophile elements in Martian meteorites to evaluate their behavior and the implications for degassing of magmatic water and, by inference, water in the Martian mantle.
