This is the third of a projected series of Landmark Papers to be published by the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland that are intended to portray key areas of the mineral sciences. The first two volumes covered volcanic petrology and structural topology, respectively. The Landmark Papers project itself brings to mind the more than 75 volumes of Benchmark Papers in Geology published commercially in the 1970s and 1980s. To judge by the book here under review, the new Landmark Papers set higher standards than their predecessors.
