As in most books with “contributed” chapters, there is bound to be unevenness in coverage and technique. In this Extra Lapis publication, the reader’s perception of any uneven quality is likely to be much diminished by the innumerable magnificent illustrations, which seemingly take control over the text. Sounds crazy, but after all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Most chapters are about 3 or 4 pages long, the longest at 10 pages being “Old classics and new finds from the United Kingdom” (I. Jones). Excellent examples of fluorite from County Durham and Northumberland grace private collections and museums worldwide....
