The peaceful early-morning scenery at Te Mata Peak near Napier, Hawkes Bay (New Zealand) tries to disguise the looming seismic hazard. Long-term deformation due to seismically active faults formed ridges, valleys, and an impressive landscape. However, among many other regions in New Zealand, this picturesque area is exposed to earthquakes that threaten communities and infrastructure. In this BSSA issue, the Special Section on Seismic Hazard Modeling covers a wide range of topics related to modern methods in seismic hazard assessment. Starting with the “Introduction to the BSSA Special Issue and SRL Focus Section on Seismic Hazard Models” (this issue), you will find 26 papers on various aspects of seismic hazard assessment. Note the companion Focus Section in SRL provides additional papers as part of a comprehensive compilation of recent seismic hazard studies published in the SSA journals.
