The cover image shows Cuba and the Caribbean Sea looking from the east, photographed from the International Space Station (25 March 2018). The dramatic view from space on parts of the Caribbean region introduces the BSSA Special Section on “Caribbean Tectonics, Seismicity and Earthquake Hazards”. Recent significant earthquakes in Haiti and Puerto Rico, active volcanism on La Soufriere, and patterns of crustal deformation highlight the dynamic tectonic setting and associated natural hazards of the Caribbean region. This Special Section features sixteen articles on seismic hazard assessment, ground-motion modeling, specific earthquake source studies and tsunami modeling in the Caribbean. Disaster reconnaissance and societal impacts of earthquakes or other hazards are discussed as well in this Special Section.
