Aerial view of the historic district of Charleston, South Carolina, with St. Philip’s Church prominent in the foreground and the flat expanse of the Atlantic Coastal Plain in the background. There was extensive damage to the historic district in the 1886 Charleston earthquake, with St. Philip’s Church prominent in some of the historic photos of the damage. The city sits atop about 850 m of Atlantic Coastal Plain sediments. The Atlantic Coastal Plain has a large ground shaking potential that is the topic of four papers in the Special Section on Advances in Site Response Estimation within this issue.
