The second part is devoted to the fundamentals of molecular vibrations and their application to the vibrational spectra of crystals. The different types of coordinates describing the atomic motions are discussed in detail with particular interest in the symmetry coordinates and their practical applications for description and assignment of the normal modes of vibration. The importance of symmetry group theory applied to this description deserves additional attention and the Appendix is devoted to the principles of group representations and their applications in the assignments of the normal vibration modes.
