Small-scale assemblies of gravity and magnetic data sets and their interpretation are valuable for hydrocarbon exploration. Since 1982 in the United States and 1988 worldwide, such data have become increasingly available and used in oil companies, some of whose personnel never may have looked at a gravity map before. This philosophy paper has a list of applications of these data sets and their interpretations, followed by some pitfalls and a list of some existing continent-scale data sets.
