Abstract

Numerous spectacular springs discharge from the Snake Plain aquifer along the north side of the Snake River canyon near Hagerman, Idaho (Fig. 1). This stretch of canyon, known as the Thousand Springs area, contains 11 of the 65 springs in the United States that discharge more than 72,400 acre-ft annually (Meinzer, 1927, p. 27). The springs can be reached by automobile or can be viewed from a distance. Most springs are on private land and permission is needed to enter the area, but some, such as Niagara Springs, are on public lands.
