Abstract

The site is located in Sec.8, T.32N., R.2E., La Salle County, Illinois (Fig. 1), on the south bank of the Vermilion River,0.5 mi(0.8 km) west (downstream) of the town of Lowell (Fig. 2). It isin the Margery C. Carlson Nature Preserve owned by the Illinois Department of Conservation. Groups of more than 25 peopleshould check with the site superintendent at Starved Rock StatePark before entering the Preserve. For photographic purposes, thesite can be viewed from the opposite bank, which is ccessiblethrough abandoned clay pits owned by Roy Alleman, Jr. (VillageInn, Tonics, Illinois, 815-442-3535).
