The abandoned Bear Valley Strip Mine is in the Western Middle Field of the Pennsylvania Anthracite Region in the Valleyand Ridge Province (Fig. 1). The intersection of lat. 40°45'50„Nand long. 76°35'45„ W marks the locality on the Shamokin, Pennsylvania 7½-minute Quadrangle map (1969 edition, photorevised 1975). The mine can be reached from the junction of Pennsylvania 61 and 125 in Shamokin as follows.
