The purpose of this paper is to collate the widely scattered information published prior to 1976 which bears on the ostracode genus Candona in the nearctic realm. This work amounts to a review and stops short of revision; the writer believes that an attempt at revision at this time would be premature, owing to the virtual lack of a rational taxonomic framework. It is hoped that the present paper will hasten the day of bona fide revision by providing a unified reference point for further taxonomic and other work.

Review and Index through 1975 of Genus Candona (Ostracoda) in North America (Exclusive of Pre-Quaternary Species)
An objective index to the literature is given for Genus Candona (Ostracoda) in North America, through 1975, combined with a subjective review pertaining to validity and synonymy of species. Pre-Quaternary species are not considered. There are 102 entries, including 97 names. Taxonomy of Candona has not surpassed the initial descriptive level. Specific diagnosis can be based on valve morphology alone. There are about 45 known valid nearctic species, most of which are clearly confined to the nearctic realm; supposed holarctic ranges of other species are questioned.
