An Annotated Bibliography of Grand Canyon Geology (Supplement, 1857–1983)
Volume 2 of the annotated bibliography on Grand Canyon geology includes references from 1857 to 1983. Among these citations are several hard-to-find references, some of which are classic geological publications.
One of these works, Balduin Möllhausen’s report on J. C.. Ives’ Colorado River exploring expedition of 1857-1858, is particularly troublesome; it is a rare two-volume set and it has not been translated from the German. The copy of this set that I was fortunate to examine is apparently an undated "first edition1’ that may have been published in 1860 (dated editions carry an 1861 date). If the 1860 date is correct, Möllhausen’s geological report antedates J. S. Newberry’s 1861 report. Möllhausen’s volumes are, irregardless of the date, an historically and geologically important supplement not only to Newberry’s report (in Ives, 1861) but to Ives’ entire volume. In the summary at the end of Möllhausen’s Volume 2 there are three stratigraphie columns of the Grand Canyon region. The importance of this work I felt mandated a reprinting of at least these columns—primarily for the sake of geological history. They have not to my knowledge been reprinted elsewhere, and their inclusion here in a more easily obtained publication will hopefully benefit some researchers. These columns are in the Appendix.
Another publication that I am delighted to include in this bibliography is Marcou’s (1858) monograph on North American geology. Despite the amazingly complete holdings of the libraries that I frequent, Marcou’s volume continued to elude me. I came across it quite accidentally one

Volume 2 of the annotated bibliography on Grand Canyon geology includes references from 1857 to 1983. Among these citations are several hard-to-find references, such as Balduin llhausen's report on J.C. Ives Colorado River exploring expedition of 1857-1858 and Marcou's (1858) monograph on North American geology. This volume also includes significant updates to the type fossils catalog. These revisions correct a few errors in volume 1, and add new information, including seven species.
