The accompanying geological map of South America is preliminary to a final colored map which will be prepared by The Geological Society of America with the corrections and modifications submitted by geologists acquainted with South America. Therefore it should have a wide distribution and much careful study by geologists with South American experience.

Each person or organization who has knowledge of geological conditions in South America is urged to study the accompanying preliminary map and to send in tracings of any corrections that should be made on the final map. Such corrections would include geological contacts, major faults, intercountry correlations, and corrections of the explanatory legend. They should be accompanied by a letter explaining the source and nature of the data upon which the correction is based for the use of the committee. All corrections should be sent to:

Mr. George W. Stose, United States Geological Survey, Washington 25, D. C.

The final map will be printed in the standard geological color system used in the geological map of North America. For the convenience of those who desire to color the preliminary map in an approximation of the final color scheme, the standard color system is as follows:

System   Color
Quaternary   Brownish-yellow
Tertiary   Yellow-ocher
Cretaceous   Olive-green
Jurassic   Blue-green
Triassic   Greenish-blue
Carboniferous   Blue shades
Devonian   Blue gray
Silurian   Blue purple
Ordovician   Red purple
Cambrian   Dull red
Pre-Cambrian   Brown
