ABSTRACT

A radiolarian zonation consisting of 10 zones is proposed for the Upper Devonian (Famennian) and Lower Carboniferous (Mississippian) of the southern United States. In the Arbuckle Mountains and Criner Hills of Oklahoma, Upper Devonian and Mississippian Radiolaria-bearing samples were collected from the Woodford, Sycamore and ‘Caney’ Formations as well as the basal portion of the Goddard Formation. The following 11 sections were studied, integrated through correlation of first and last appearance datums (FAD’s and LAD’s) of distinct biostratigraphically useful species, and linked to published zonations where possible: Criner Hills Locality 1, Criner Hills Locality 2, Henry House Creek (West Stream), Henry House (South Side), Arbuckle Anticline (South Limb, 1-35), Arbuckle Anticline (North Limb, 1-35), Ti Valley, Hickory Creek, Philips Creek, Oil Creek, and Viola (near Delaware Creek). Three radiolarian zones occur at the Criner Hills Locality 1 section: Staurentactinia spp.-Lapidopiscum spp. Zone, Lapidopiscum spp.-Protoalbaillella deflandrei Zone, and Glanta crinerensis-Protoalbaillella media Zone. Four radiolarian zones occur at the Criner Hills Locality 2 section: Pylentonema spp.-Staurentactinia spp. Zone, Staurentactinia spp.-Lapidopiscum spp. Zone, Lapidopiscum spp.-Protoalbaillella deflandrei Zone, and Glanta crinerensis-Protoalbaillella media Zone. Two radiolarian zones occur at the Henry House (South Side) section: Lapidopiscum spp.-Protoalbaillella deflandrei Zone and Glanta crinerensis-Protoalbaillella media Zone. Two radiolarian zones occur at the Henry House Creek (West Stream) section: Staurentactinia spp.-iMpidopiscum spp. Zone and an undefined biozone. Five radiolarian zones occur at the Arbuckle Anticline (South Limb, 1-35) section: Pylentonema spp.-Staurentactinia spp. Zone, Staurentactinia spp.-Lapidopiscum spp. Zone, Lapidopiscum spp.-Protoalbaillella deflandrei Zone, Glanta crinerensis-Protoalbaillella media Zone, and a Pre - “A. cartalla-A. furcata” Interval. Four radiolarian zones occur at the Arbuckle Anticline (North Limb, 1-35) section: Lapidopiscum spp.-Protoalbaillella deflandrei Zone, the Pre - “A. cartalla-A. furcata” Interval, Albaillella cartalla-Albaillella furcata Zone, and Albaillella furcata-Ormistonella hickoryensis Zone. Three radiolarian zones occur at the Ti Valley section: Lapidopiscum spp.-Protoalbaillella deflandrei Zone, Protoalbaillella deflandrei-Holoeciscus spp. Zone, and an undefined biozone. The Hickory Creek, Philips Creek, Oil Creek and Viola sections contain the Ormistonella hickoryensis-Cornum spp. Zone, Cornum spp.-Trilacertus baumgartneri Zone, Trilacertus baumgartneri-Circulaforma robusta Zone, and an unzoned interval, respectively.

This zonation has been calibrated using concomitant data supplied by conodonts and goniatites. This biostratigraphic data serves as a bridge, linking the proposed zonation to North American and European standard zones as well as the geochronometric time scale. Two new subfamilies, three new genera, and 50 new species are described and figured herein. Also, the stratigraphic distribution of 185 species is presented. Radiolarian biostratigraphic data from a third area, the Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma, was re-examined and integrated with this study.
